Today the Zimbabwe men’s cricket team the Chevrons, will begin their super six of the World cup qualifiers to India with a clash against Oman at Queens sports club in Bulawayo
With Zimbabwe banished to the Siberia of international football, cricket has become a rallying point for sports lovers across Zimbabwe and the Patriots Media Team through their chief content creator has decided to give a few tidbits about cricket and tournament we are aiming to qualify for.
✓ The ODI( One Day International) world cup is held every four years and this year it’s in India
✓ 8 teams have already qualified and two will join the 8 from the current tournament we are hosting
✓ An ODI has an innings (batting ) of 50 overs per team, each over has 6 balls
✓ Runs are scored by running between wickets, hitting the boundary(4 runs when the ball crosses the boundary on the ground and 6 runs if it does so in the air)
✓ Each bowler is allowed 10 overs in an ODI
✓ A player can be deemed out if: they hit the ball in the air and it’s caught, they have their wicket hit by the ball, they are hit Leg Before Wicket(LBW) where the batsman is hit by the ball on the pad and it’s deemed the ball was pitching in line enroute to hitting the wickets, a player is runout through their wicket being hit whilst they are out of the Crease
✓ Runs not scored from the bat either are called leg byes or just byes depending on their source
✓ A NO BALL is when the bowler over steps the demarcation line , they must have at least a part of their front foot behind the line the no ball results in a run being added to the batting team and in ODIs it result in what we call a free hit where the batter is free to hit the ball and whatever the consequence they can’t be out.
✓ * A WIDE is a result of a bowler bowling a ball deemed out of possible reach for the batter, it results in a run being given to the batting team and the bowler has to bowl again the same ball
✓ Match officials in cricket are called umpires
✓ A duck is when a batter is dismissed without scoring it’s a Diamond duck when they are dismissed without facing an ball, golden duck when they are dismissed on the first ball, silver duck when dismissed on the second ball they face.
