UNPACKING THE WAR VETERANS LEAGUE CONFERENCE THEME

The inaugural War Veterans League Conference is being held under the theme “Force of the past, Power of the present, Inspiration of the future.” It is a pregnant theme speaking deeply into the heavy presence of the men and women who sacrificed their lives to bring Zimbabwe’s freedom.
The careful selection of the terms “force, past, Power, present, Inspiration and future” does not only exude strength but is like in the movies what is called a time capsule which transcends from time immemorial.
In my understanding of it, it leaves no hero or heroine behind dating back as far as the time of Mbuya Nehanda who today stands in the middle of Harare’s CBD giving confidence to her children while inspiring to the younger generations that never saw her.
In his explanation of what the theme means, ZANU PF Secretary for War Veterans League Cde Douglas K Mahiya had this to say.
“People without a history are people without an identity. Zimbabweans identify themselves in the political platform global regional, regional, by the Chimurenga war. The journey to and from, the problems that were faced, the successes that we achieved are in the heads in the heads of these war vets. They need to offload that information for the benefit of the people so that we tell and represent before the nation the past which is their identity,” Cde Mahiya said.
“The present is the power that you are seeing happening today which includes road rehabilitation, dam construction and everything else. It is the evidence of the political power that our President and First Secretary Cde E.D Mnangagwa is using, that the people of Zimbabwe through their forces usurped from the British.
“We need to also tell the people that after doing that, by 2030 we would have achieved the revolutionary task that we set for ourselves of vision 2030. So we are the past, the present and the future.”
