LATE RAINS AND HARVESTING TIPS

Following the rains that have been pouring this week in some parts of the country, SeedCo through its official Wendy Mutashu Madzura shared some harvesting tips to help farmers avoid losses.
Speaking on her Twitter page on what she termed “Wisdom Wednesday” she noted that it is important to avoid harvesting in wet weather as it affects the dry down and promotes the development of fungal diseases in storage.
She added that it is crucial to wait for ideal weather conditions unless if drying facilities are in place.
“When we receive such rains at a late stage of development of the crop where we are now at physiological maturity, it is important for us to understand that harvesting when the grain is moist will only affect the rate of dry down and promote the development of rot in storage.”
She added that maize cobs which are dropped allow for rains to just drop while those facing upwards must be left in the field until it us conducive to facilitate dry down and at the desired moisture content of 12,5 percent.
