Zimbabwe cabinet has approved the construction of 3000 schools by 2025 as part of President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s drive to revamp the education sector.
The 3000 schools will be built in all the 10 provinces and funds for commencement of construction of first 150 schools have already been secured.
The announcement was made by Minister of Information, Publicity and Broadcasting Services Hon. Monica Mutsvangwa in a post Cabinet briefing in Harare.
“Cabinet considered and approved the construction of Government Boarding Schools as presented by the Minister of Public Service, Labour and Social Welfare, Hon. P. Mavima as Chairperson of the Cabinet Committee on Social Services and Poverty Eradication,” announced Hon. Mutsvangwa.
She added: “The nation is informed that the country has realised a phenomenal increase in learner enrolment, and this has resulted in the need for the establishment of more primary and secondary schools.”
Zimbabwe, according to Mutsvangwa, has 9 778 schools, with 6 798 primary and 2 980 being secondary schools against an enrolment of 4, 659, 993.
“Only 1.9% of the 6 798 primary schools are boarding schools with only 35 of these being Government owned. Of the 2 980 secondary schools, only 10.6% are boarding schools and only 60 are government owned. The boarding secondary schools can only accomodate 24, 000 learners, a mere 0.52% of the current enrolment,” explained Hon. Mutsvangwa.
President Mnangagwa has since taking office in 2017, vowed to rebuild Zimbabwe brick by brick by folstering policies that are resilient and at same time conducive for steering the ship on right path.
So far, the President’s performance has been labelled exceptional as the economy is responding well, the country has bumper yield making perennial hunger almost untraceable, roads are being rehabilitated and housing units being constructed.
President Mnangagwa’s government has also ventured on ambitious plans of revamping manufacturing industries as well as mines that were closed down due to financial meltdown some two decades ago when UK, EU and USA imposed nocturnal sanctions.
While President Mnangagwa is re-engaging with countries that imposed sanctions on Zimbabwe, he has told Zimbabweans that rebuilding the country will be done with or without the sanctions.
