Ambassador Taona Mushayavanhu, the Permanent Representative of Zimbabwe to the African Union and the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa today deposited instruments of ratification to the African Medicines Agency AMA at the African Union Commission.

Zimbabwe becomes the 12th country to fully ratify the Treaty and once fully ratified, the Agency will help Africa harmonize regulations in drug registration, strengthen the fight against counterfeit and substandard medical products. With the coming in of the African Continental Free Trade Area, AMA will come in handy in the building of Africa’s Research and Development capacity in pharmaceuticals.

This move follows attempts by the African Union Commission to establish a Pharmaceutical Manufacturing Plan for Africa within the framework of the New Partnership for Africa’s Development NEPA, aimed at improving the quality, safe and efficacious medical products and health technologies for the African population as requested in the Abuja Summit in 2005.

In 2019 the African Union Assembly adopted a Treaty to establish the AMA to enhance regulatory oversight across the continent and meet the challenges of access to quality, safe, and efficacious medicines in the continent. The Treaty affirms that quality-assured, safe and efficacious medical products are fundamental to health and safety of the population of Africa.
